AN Australian innovative green-powered desalination vessel is set to provide a sustainable solution to coastal drought areas around the world.
Seadov (Sustainable Energy and Desalination on Vessel) is an Australian invention that has the potential to cost-effectively solve coastal region water shortages around the world using \'green marine\' technology.
Seadov uses a combination of renewable energy and marine technology to service on board Reverse Osmosis desalination plant in conjunction with an innovative combination of wave, tidal, solar and wind energy devices. This combination powers the on-board reverse osmosis desalination system and its associated \'ship-to-shore\' pipeline pumping system.
Seadov is typically positioned 10 kilometres offshore. The potable water produced on the vessel is pumped to shore for final treatment before being injected into the local water grid or reservoir.
Traditional on-shore desalination plants frequently depend on mains electrical power, which generates significant levels of CO2 whilst shore based wind farms are more cost effectively deployed to service shore based green power needs.
The breakthrough with Seadov is the effective adaptation of renewable energy devices within a marine environment to cost-effectively produce both electrical energy and potable water for coastal regions in most parts of the world.
Seadov can operate 24/7 to produce up to 35 million litres(ML) litres of drinkable water per day (subject to site conditions), and supply reliable input power and or potable water to base supplies (dams-reservoir-direct to grid) . Seadov water is a perfect enabling buffer allowing deferment or removal of water restrictions wherever intermittent water restrictions occur. Seadov can also defer or eliminate the need for new dam construction at many locations throughout the world.
Based on a moored at sea vessel, preferably in robust conditions, not only can this technology assist in solving water crises off coastal regions serving major cities around the world, but it can also be used for humanitarian aid purposes to generate potable water and electricity for countries struck by war or natural disasters.
Seadov is also a ideal solution for developing countries seeking to deliver potable water and electrical energy services to previously deprived communities and where hygiene levels and food production can be significantly improved due to a reliable daily supply of drought proofing potable water.
